Is the "Marriage Penalty" on income tax true?

Well me and my husband got married in Oct of 2009 when we did our taxes we def got screwed we got back a little bit more then what I would have gotten on my own and I make a couple of grand less then my husband. It wasn't fun since we thought we would get double what we actually got. But I love my husband and I wouldn't change us getting married.
