What was Elsa's [Indiana Jones] role for the Germans?

In The Last Crusade, aside from being a traitor, what was Elsa's role in the German army? I seem to recall her and another woman - behind the fireplace working at a table - but I was wondering what they would have done for the Germans, as women?
