Pagefile.sys on windows vista...?

Im using an OS of Windows Vista Home Premium on local disk C theres a hidden file named.. pagefile.sys i know that is an important system file and not to delete but why it keeps on increasing its file size from 500mb it increase to 2.5gb why?
